Intermission was an exclusive exhibition held at the Colley Ison Gallery in November 2021. In this collection artist Rick Garland encapsulates his own fading memories in antique glass bell jars and Victorian cabinets in attempt to preserve them and keep them safe. These absorbing images invite us to consider the nature of our own memories and we may find ourselves asking 'What would we put in our 'cabinet of curiosities'?
Four of these intriguing images have been produced as signed limited editions of just 15 copies.
Rick Garland is a true photorealist painter, and an absolute master of his craft. He focuses on atmosphere and light. His ability to transform abandoned and derelict spaces into captivating and engaging images is remarkable.
Rick Garland writes: ‘I have a fascination with nature’s grip on man-made creations. How purposefully built structures transform with time, weather, people and circumstance. What, at first glance, could be dismissed as an obsolete, man-made, functional structure, has been adopted as a canvas of vibrant, creative expression and is now a living organism being reclaimed slowly and systematically by its natural surroundings’.
